The Guide Association is a registered charity and is the largest voluntary organisation for girls and women in the UK, with nearly 700,000 members, and is part of the largest women's organisation in the world, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) with over 10 million members. As part of a worldwide Movement, it enables girls and young women to fulfil their potential and to take an active and responsible role in society through its distinctive, stimulating and enjoyable programme of activities.
The UK's 35,000 Rainbow, Brownie, Guide and Ranger units are all run by trained adult members and helpers who give over 10 million hours of voluntary service every year, the equivalent of 5,500 full-time jobs.
Guiding in Hedon : Hedon is well-served with Guide units : there are Rainbows, Brownies and Guides who meet weekly in the town itself, and the Division Ranger Unit meets in the nearby village of Paull and takes girls from all over the South Holderness
Division, many from Hedon.
RAINBOWS are aged from 5 to 7 years
BROWNIES are aged 7 to 10 or 11 years
GUIDES are aged 10 to 14 years or older
RANGERS are aged 14 to 26 years.
The Guide Association has undergone much modernisation in recent years and it is far removed from the public image of girls sitting in draughty church halls learning to tie knots! Although camping still plays an important role in the local units and is much enjoyed by the girls, there is much more on offer: the weekly meetings give the girls opportunities to socialise and develop as individuals as well as learning new interests and skills, they have opportunities to go on visits, outings and holidays, and in the summer of 2001 four local girls and one Guide leader represented Yorkshire Guides in Sweden, Poland and Mexico!

If you are interested in further details of Hedon's Guide units, of whatever age group, please contact the District Commissioner .
If you would like to know more about local Guiding generally, you can visit the websites for East Yorkshire Guides and Holderness Rangers or email Andrea at andrea@honey4.karoo.co.uk
Volunteers to help run the town's units are always VERY welcome - again, contact the District Commissioner or Holderness Rangers for more information.
